What do Occupational Therapists do?

Occupational Therapy enables people to participate in the activities they find meaningful. These activities include taking care of oneself (and others), working, volunteering, and participating in hobbies, interests and social events.

Optimise OT Cowra provide the following services

  • Functional Assessments can be completed to assist people with a disability to access the supports they need. A functional assessment completed by an Occupational Therapist is in-depth and holistic to evaluate a person’s functional capacity with their day-to-day life i.e. mobility, self-care, domestic tasks, community access and self-management. For the assessment to be holistic and comprehensive, it is often necessary to collaborate with others including allied health professionals, family, caregivers and support staff.

  • In conjunction with a comprehensive functional assessment, recommendations can be made to inform housing options for people who require highly modified physical environments to accommodate for their function and day-to-day supports. This is often called a Housing and Support Needs Assessment.

  • Assistive technology refers to equipment items that are used to increase, maintain or improve independence. Assessment, trial and prescription of assistive technology is comprehensive to ensure that it meets the client’s current and future needs. The ultimate goal when identifying assistive technology is to ensure engagement and safety with day-to-day activities are optimised. Assistive technology solutions may include but are not limited to:

    • 24-hour positioning

    • Seated postural supports

    • Manual and power mobility aids (wheelchair, mobility scooter)

    • Pressure care products i.e. mattresses, cushions

    • Transfer aids i.e. hoists/slings

    • Shower chairs and shower commodes

    • Personal alarms i.e. smart watches and falls devices

    • Adaptive utensils

  • Assessment of a person's everyday environment aims to evaluate where minor home adaptations, education and assistive technology may be beneficial to improve or maintain independence and quality of life living at home and/or reduce risk of injury. This includes;

    • Access solutions

    • Falls prevention

    • Minor home adaptions i.e. grab rails, threshold ramps.

  • Intervention can be provided to assist with development of skills such as meal preparation, budgeting/money management, daily routines, or developing skills for volunteer or paid work. Occupational Therapist’s assist people either directly or indirectly through their supports to develop life skills that enables functional engagement in day-to-day activities.
